FUERTES LÓPEZ, MERCEDES
The vitality of an open society in the new domain of cyberspace requires the existence of a solid legal system. European Union law is attempting to construct a suitable framework in order to guarantee a minimum of security in communications, and protect infrastructures and essential services from new threats and dangers. However, in the authors opinion, these precautions are insufficient, given the powerful influence of major corporations. Recalling other, medieval, historical experiences, the author insists on the importance of reinforcing the role played by European institutions in order to neutralise the power of the new feudal lords and guarantee the public freedoms of citizens.
